It turned out to be a close shave. Fighting continued for the best part of the night, as the British found out the hard way that the attack they finally managed to beat back consisted of only one battalion out of the original three who had begun the assault. The other two eventually found their way, and by the time Cole and Newton’s company stumbled back wearily down the hill, several hundred men on both sides had lost their lives, including General Hill’s brigade-major. Hill himself, they heard, had only very narrowly escaped capture.

Newton and Cole had escaped unhurt, and yet Cole couldn’t shake off the memory of the disdainful undertone in his friend’s voice as he retrieved the rifle. Dropping a weapon was an unforgivable disgrace. His youth and the confusion might excuse him in the eyes of others, but it was Newton of all people who had witnessed his failing, and his pride hurt sorely.

There was, however, no time for explanations or apologies. Time for sleep was past, and Lieutenant Cole had to report back to staff to resume his duties.
